Aquafig Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has organized a food safety workshop for the students and staff of Ajumako-Afransi Technical Institute in the Central Region, following a suspected food poisoning incident that hospitalized over 30 students earlier this year.
The incident occurred on June 11, 2024, and was linked to waakye and stew served during lunchtime.
The foundation initiated the workshop to provide essential food safety knowledge and skills to prevent future occurrences and promote a healthier food culture within the school.
The workshop, held at the school premises on Saturday, November 30, 2024, was sponsored by Ms Patience Kicher, a Ghanaian philanthropist and nurse based in the United States.
The workshop's objective was to ensure compliance with food safety regulations, promote good hygienic practices, and safeguard the well-being of students.
Mr Stephen Coleman, President of Aquafig Foundation, conducted a detailed session for the students, focusing on proper food safety and hygienic practices. The interactive approach was aimed at helping the students understand the importance of personal hygiene, safe food handling, and storage techniques to prevent food contamination.
Earlier in the day, Mr Coleman and Miss Ella Dorsese, coordinating unit member of Aquafig, met with the school’s kitchen staff to educate them on proper, safe food preparation and handling techniques. Mr Coleman, a food safety activist and trainer, highlighted critical aspects of maintaining cleanliness in food preparation areas and adhering to safety protocols to prevent health risks.
The Vice Principal of Ajumako-Afransi Technical Institute, Mr Wilfred Arthur, on behalf of the principal of the school, Ms Mabel Kuampah, expressed gratitude to Aquafig Foundation and Ms Kitcher for their timely intervention. "This workshop is a turning point for us. It has equipped our team with the skills and knowledge needed to prioritize student health and safety," he said.
